Drive around the Village of Greendale and you’ll notice something special, and that’s because of its fascinating history. It is one of only three government-sponsored "greenbelt" communities built during the Great Depression under a federal program designed to create jobs and build housing for working-class people. It was carefully planned to be affordable and walkable, with lots of green space. Today, that’s evident in Greendale’s walking trails, village center, parks, and cozy homes. As the community grew in the 1960s and ’70s, it followed many of the elements of its original master plan.

Fascinating Fact: Greendale’s town planner positioned the original homes near the curb and turned them "backward" so that each home’s the large picture looked out of the lawn and garden. Today, they’re known as “backward houses.”
